[ Character's Name ] : Motochika Chōsokabe
[ Character's Age ] : 23
[ Series ] : Sengoku BASARA
[ Canon Point ] : Post-The Last Party Movie

[ History ] :
BASARA Wiki!

Admittedly the above mostly details the occurrences of the game. Motochika’s background is largely underdeveloped and even historically, there admittedly isn’t a single likeness in accordance to his SenBASA!self.

Motochika’s role in the anime only varies in terms of the actions that he takes. In the first season, he remains on his island of Shikoku for a long time, wondering if he should join in the ranks of Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin to help surround Oda Nobunaga. Ultimately, he decides to join in the encirclement and when they’re successful, he returns once more to his beloved island.

In the second season, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi takes the spot of the main antagonist, more and more of the lands under his power are treated badly. This rings true for multiple regions and the people often run to Shikoku in search of shelter and proper treatment. Motochika is more than happy to take in anyone who comes to him for help, sheltering them in the villages under the control of the people in his crew. When Hideyoshi signs a pact with his rival Motounari and begins to approach the island of Shikoku, Motochika takes pride in the Fugaku fortress that he had recently perfected and is more than happy to take them head on.

However on the occasion of the actual battle, Motochika isn’t quite so lucky. Hideyoshi manages to overpower not only his cannon, but also him. The entire sea was pushed back in the process of it all, which is only an example of Hideyoshi’s monstrous strength. In his final stand of rebellion, Motochika uses what’s left of his stamina to destroy the Fugaku so it doesn’t fall into Toyotomi hands. Passing out, he ends up plummeting into the very epicenter of the explosion. The sea also comes back with a vengeance, engulfing the unconscious Motochika and part of his crew in one huge tidal wave.

And then they’re back a couple episodes later, ready to beat up the Date clan because they need their horses. Can’t keep a good man down.

So he and Date Masamune scuffle it out for a while, complete with a lights how of lightning and fire that don’t really make much sense in the Sengoku Era, but then they eventually come to realize exactly who they’re fighting- the One-Eyed Dragon and the Demon of the Western seas, respectively. It’s clear that they have the same goal of beating down Toyotomi Hideyoshi for one reason or another, and so the Chōsokabe clan does end up getting their horses by hitching a ride with the Date clan. A bit of traveling and more issues later, Date’s second-in-command Kojuurou returns with the news that the other half of Motochika’s pirate crew are already duking it out back at Castle Osaka with the intention of avenging their supposedly-dead-but-really-not captain.

It doesn’t take Motochika even a second to consider what he has to do and he’s off to Castle Osaka to lend a hand to his men. Even though he can’t deliver a good punch to the Hideyoshi bastard who caused him so much trouble in the first place, he doesn’t seem to have much of an issue with it. The battle won easily enough and there is a happy ending for the pirate.

Also, by the credits, the Fugaku ends up rebuilt and is equipped with two canons.

And then in the movie he rams into Mōri's ship and it's awesome and they fight and okay he's basically just polluting the air with smog and adds nothing to the plot. But he's there.

[ Personality ] :
Motochika is the burliest, gruffest, loudest, most prideful, considerate, and sympathetic pirate brute you will ever meet. No, really! It’s not even the case of him being a nice guy underneath a rough exterior, it’s like the rough and tough pirate and nice guy intermingle with every action. It’s a curious mix, but somehow… it works for him.

But to make things very clear, Motochika is not someone to be pushed around. Nice guy overall or not, he remains to be a pirate- and not just any seafaring pirate. He’s the pirate who doubles as a warlord during the turbulent Sengoku Era of Japan, having claimed the island of Shikoku for himself and his crew, rightfully earning the title ‘Demon of the Western Seas’. It takes willpower, determination, and skill to be such a known figure and it is a very rare occasion when someone other than his rival, Mouri Motonari, challenges him. Even if he can be boasted to be the nicest guy you’ll ever meet, he’s still full of grit and should never be underestimated as an opponent.

That said, Motochika isn’t just some big brute who would jump into a war for absolutely no reason or because it looked fun. The man has more sense than that. He’ll bide his time on a decision of entering battle or not, and he’ll take advice from someone he deems worthy as a trusted source. In some cases, even if he’s provoked by a threat to his own person, he won’t duke it out when he gets a feeling that there’s a more to the situation than meets the eye. He possesses a hidden intellect that helps him gauge his decisions as a captain – because they’re important ones, especially when the lives of his men hang in the balance.

If Motochika were to follow one constant rule concerning war, it would be that each person, regardless of whether they participate in battle or not, has value. His men follow him with the utmost devotion, call him Aniki, and end up laying their lives on the line for him. Naturally, he only considers it right to return the favor. Killing his men in mindless slaughter is the quickest and easiest way to tick him off- right up there with hurting with your own men. It goes to show just how far he believes this when he’ll take in the spies of his enemy after they’ve been captured, feed them, and even let them converse with the other guests or the crew sometimes.

In addition to that, anyone who comes to him for help also tends to receive it. He’ll take in runaways from other lands to give them a chance to live better until the war is over- and then he encourages them to return to their homes and work on rebuilding things. He recognizes that that kind of honest work may even be tougher than swinging around swords and spears. So even if they want to go on board with him to try to repay his kindness, he’ll shoot down their offer. He sees himself as a pirate, whereas they’re just a bunch of honest folk who can’t afford to go wasting their lives. It’s that kind of overall concern and consideration for people, who aren’t even his people, that gets him labeled as the nicest guy around.

Yet otherwise, if you’re not someone he’s helping, it’s the usual brute that shows up. Full of gusto and bravado, he’s every image of a coarse scallywag. Loud and condescending, he’ll call his opponents and crew alike by the same insulting names, though it’s admittedly meant to be more endearing towards his men. There’s an incredible amount of confidence that comes off him in waves and despite the caution he takes in war, he’s actually very action-driven. If his crew needs horses, he’s not against ambushing the nearest group and taking their horses by force. Depending on the situation, he’s either the kindest and most considerate pirate around or he could make it very clear as to why he’s called the Demon of the Western Seas.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Physically, it can’t be denied that Motochika is something of a powerhouse. He has a lot of brute strength and lacks a bit of finesse, especially when you consider the fact that his weapon of choice is nothing more than an anchor on a stick—oh. Wait. It also has a chain attached. Though even then, his fighting style is a wild one that consists of a lot of big movements. While that would normally make him rather slow, his ridiculous amount of strength makes it child’s play for him to swing around that spear-of-sorts. In addition to that, he has a strange set of fire skills that allow him to conjure flames when swinging about his spear, or even add fire-based propulsion to give it enough speed to blast off into the air, even while he’s riding it. He’s a master of his admittedly strange weapon, and is also very good with direct hand-to-hand combat.

Mentally, he’s not that bad either. Not exactly a master strategist like some of the characters, but he’s not stupid by any means. He’s got a good head on his shoulders that allows him to tell when things may be strange or when things simply aren’t adding up. Though in comparison, that may actually make him seem rather dull. But he’s still capable enough that he was able to conquer the island of Shikoku and take it for himself.

In terms of weaknesses, Motochika’s got a raging temper and a really obvious trigger button. While he’s normally chill and doesn’t seem to mind when a threat is made to himself, it’s when you put innocents or take it out on his crew that he’s ready to kick your ass into the next millennium. Pointless slaughter and breakings of agreements piss him off to no end and even if he had a plan before, it doesn’t matter because all he wants is the offender’s head on a silver platter.

Also, he’s kind of a coarse person, making him a little hard to get along with if you’re not used to insults that are meant to be endearing or general abuse once he learns to like you. He’ll treat a stranger nicely enough, if a little informally, but enemies and people close to him alike receive a lot of rough treatment.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
- He has a parrot. Like a good pirate should.
- Dunno what’s under the eye patch, considering that historically, the eye patch wasn’t even there in the first place.
- For one reason or another, he can use his fire powers to propel his spear into the air and ride on it. Yeah.
- Also, he possesses an interest in creating mechanical objects, such as the cannon that the Fugaku has.

I ain't responsible for any of the actions I have taken within the past 7 days.

[but he doesn't sound guilty]

On that note.

I woke up with a shitload of shiny crap in my ship and one mute kid that I don't want anymore.

Come and claim the kid. I'm keepin' the gold, though.

[The feed clicks on to a pirate sitting cross-legged with a child on his lap. Surely neither of those two looks familiar. Nope. Not at all.

But the [livejournal.com profile] lunateclock is quiet, hands in his lap and peering up at the [livejournal.com profile] treasurehunted instead of paying any attention to the camera at the moment.

Motochika, on the other hand, is... actually not that attentive as he looks to the camera with a slight frown. Tilting his head, he almost yawns--]

Alright, I'm gonna say my piece once and once alone. Somebody went and thought it'd be a bright idea to abduct the Little Demon of Shikoku. I'll go ahead and applaud ya for gettin' this far, but there's hell t'pay for it! Bring me back home before I get real angry! Tch. I'm pretty pissed as is.

How 'bout you, Minato? 'cept yer not allowed to use the word I just used.
[and he spares the time to glance down at Minato

The child's insta-reaction is to nod! But then he pauses mid nod and thinks about it for a moment. Angry...? No, he's not really angry. So have a quiet shake of his head instead. :O]

You're not helping me at all, kiddo. [sigh. he's cracking his neck once before wrapping an arm around Minato to keep a hold on him before changing the angle of the SFC.]  By the way, I found 'im by the mutated coral- ... which you should probably get looked at before it turns into a problem, y'know.

Anyway. Let me know if he's yours? I mean, I won't give him up to anyone - what kind of ass treats a child so lightly like that? But if ya can help me find his guardians, I'd appreciate it. 'til then, he's in the custody of Chosokabe Motochika and I'll keep 'im safe 'til his folks claim him. [Resting his chin on top of Minato's head-] Is that cool with you, Minato?

[Oh. There's a chin on his head. guess that means he has to talk. It's quiet, but hey, the kid has a voice!]

...Kay.

Hah! [His arm retracts as he ruffles Minato's hair with a big grin. Then he nods at the SFC.] There! Ya heard it yerself. I've got dibs until one of ya proves yerself to me, alright? Or you can just hand over the map to the exit and we'll be on our way and I'll find his home myself. Up to you!

[ooc: Motochika & Minato have both been aged down to 17 and 6, respectively! [livejournal.com profile] teeniki & [livejournal.com profile] hideallnoise might be used to do some tagging, too. You'll get separate threads with them but Motochika might choose to intervene to be over-protective. (Also chances of Motochika letting go of Minato are slim. Like. So slim they're non-existent. Be careful, he's not against biting.)]

[The feed clicks on and the background behind Motochika is still moving as he's carelessly free-falling out of the sky, having turned on his SFC mid-descent. Though there's a flash of something as there's suddenly a large thud that falls behind him. The pirate however, seems unperturbed like he has to take care of this every day. Which, all things considered, wouldn't be a huge surprise, right?

There's only a soft 'hup' as he finally lands on the deck of his ship, a piece of tentacle laying a fair ways away from it.]

That was a hell of a wake-up call.

[He yawns.]

So... Can we eat it?

[He's about to turn off the feed - really, he only wanted to let the kids know he was awake - before he hesitates and thinks of something else.]

Ah... The pirate ship in the South-West quadrant is free for those who can't fight against this lummox. Let me know if ya need a place to stay, yeah? I'll open it up for as long as ya need.

[filtered to SEES, Renton, Jim, Red, Silver, & N]

Invitation not optional for you kids. I need to see all of ya.

Renton, Jim, you especially, y'hear? We'll talk about self-defense lessons after ya check in.

So the kid's not feelin' so hot- ah. Minato, to clarify. Yeah yeah name rings a bell for legions of ya I figure so.... stuff it.

I've got 'im for a while and I ain't takin' no visits. If you've got somethin' to say, hold it in unless you think it's worth takin' rest from him.

[yeah. just try it now, folks.]

He's not dead, so don't freak out about goin' without 'im for a while.

[click!]

[ooc: chances of Motochika actually responding to this are low ahahaha-]
